Paul Rand was a teacher, theorist and philosopher of design with the guiding belief in which he held since the beginning of his career: good design is good will. Hayed as " Picasso of Graphic Design" by his admirers, his work was nothing formulaic. Every detail was planned with a purpose to attract the eyes and convey a message.

I like things that are playful;
I like things that are happy;
I like things that will make
the client smile.

A cigar is almost as
commonplace as an apple,
but if I fail to make ads
for cigars that are lively
and original, it will not be
the cigar that is at fault.

Good ideas rarely come in bunches.
The designer who voluntarily presents
his client with a batch of layouts
does so not out of prolificacy but out
of uncertainty or fear.
